The Duchess of Alba, who was born 98 years ago today, led an extraordinary life filled with extraordinary wealth and privilege. Born in Liria Palace in Madrid on 28 March 1926, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart was the only child of the 17th Duke of Alba (a prominent Spanish politician and diplomat during the 1930s and 1940s) and his wife, María del Rosario de Silva y Gurtubay, 9th Marchioness of San Vicente del Barco.
Back in 2009, I interviewed the Duquesa de Alba, who passed away last week in her palace here in Seville at the ripe old age of 88. The House of Alba’s extraordinary, world-class art collection includes paintings by Fra Angelico, Titian, Raphael, Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, El Greco, Reynolds, Renoir, and Chagall, as well as by Spanish painters Goya (including the famous painting of the 13th Duchess, Cayetana’s favourite work), Velazquez, Murillo, Zurbaran, Sorolla, and Zuloaga, who painted both the Duchess and her.
